Mary J. Kennedy is the coordinator of the firm’s Employment Law Practice Group and a member of the Health Law Practice Group.
Mary Jo’s practice focuses on employment law and representation of public and private schools.
Mary Jo has represented primarily employers in administrative proceedings before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) and in state and federal courts. She has successfully represented employment clients through trial in state court and at the MCAD. Mary Jo has advised employers on personnel and wage and hour issues, drafted personnel policies, and conducted a number of seminars for clients on sexual harassment in the work place and employment discrimination in the hiring process.
Additionally, Mary Jo advises a school committee on school law and open meeting law. She has drafted policies for public schools and has advised a private independent school on employment law issues.
Mary Jo has conducted independent investigations regarding staff misconduct and student misconduct in a private independent school and a private college. She has represented a private independent school on a student dismissal.
Mary Jo gained trial experience representing physicians, dentists and hospitals in trials in federal and state courts. She has also represented physicians before the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and nurses before the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Mary Jo served on the board of directors of the Hampshire Regional YMCA from 2003 to 2009. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Pioneer Valley Ballet. From 2000 to 2010, Mary Jo was on the board of directors of the Hampden County Bar Association, where she served as its president in 2003-2004. With the Massachusetts Bar Association (MBA), she served as the regional delegate for Hampden County (2006-2010), a member of the executive management board (2009-2010), a member of the governance task force (2009-2010), and a member of the Labor and Employment Section Council (2008-2009, 2010-2012). She is a current member of the MBA’s Ethics Committee.
In May 2010, Mary Jo received from the Hampden County Bar Association The John M. Greaney Award. In June 2010, she received from the MBA the President’s Special Recognition Award. Mary Jo has also been selected for inclusion in the Massachusetts Super Lawyers list published in New England Super Lawyers magazine from 2004 through 2014.
