Schools, Colleges and Universities Practice Group

We have a long history of representation of academic institutions involving a wide variety of issues. Today we are on the forefront of changes in the law involving such clients and are focused on helping them meeting their evolving needs.

Specific areas of expertise include:

  • investigation, and advice, regarding inappropriate student and faculty behavior or conduct
  • advice regarding federal and state laws and regulations governing the educational environment, student and faculty behavior, funding, and school practices. Included in these areas, among others, are Title IX issues, special education issues, and school needs issues
  • advise regarding federal and state laws and regulatory issues relating to school health
  • development of restorative justice practices and programs to deal with student and faculty behavior issues
  • review of student conduct codes
  • endowment and trust matters
  • employment and labor matters including policy and handbook development and management of specific personal issues
  • business and contracting matters including specialized issues such as:

o intellectual property
o information technology systems
o cybersecurity

  • financing and bonds
  • real estate and housing development
  • construction of school facilities
  • litigation in state and federal courts and alternative dispute resolution (in many cases, our fees may be covered by United Educators)
  • regulatory compliance and government strategies, including representation before administrative agencies and boards
  • taxation issues
